Today’s auction is “Dwayne the painting" by Kyle MacDonald.

A perfect gift for any Dwayne, anyone who knows a Dwayne, or anyone interested in getting into the Dwayne-knowing lifestyle.

I’ve known two Dwaynes in my life. (so far)

Dwayne 1 was in the 90s a friend of a family friend was named Dwayne and he was a somewhat bizarre John Waters-eque father of triplets who scared us by moving his bottom jaw denture around and gave us money to go to the store and buy buy candy on the condition we bring him back a Big Turk candy.  Still the only person I’ve ever seen eat a Big Turk.  I’ll never eat a turkish delight without thinking about that Dwayne.

Dwayne 2 is Dwayne Launt the Vancouver realtor who helped us sell our condo and buy a house in the same week.  We went into some pretty weird properties that week we with Dwayne and exchanged some “can you believe it?” type looks then went outside and had some good laughs.   An excellent week of Dwayne-ing.  He's a fun guy and rides a vespa scooter and also has a HOTLINE at 604-255-7575 so please call him if you want to buy or sell a house in Vancouver.  He’s also on instagram so follow him at @yvrdwayne !

A Painting of a Guy Painting a Painting

LINK TO AUCTION: http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/141908793258

It's funny how ideas work.  Last summer I spilt some white paint on a completely green canvas. The spill reminded me of a shirt so I added arms and a brush and face and legs and then started getting really "meta" and decided to paint an artist painting a painting.

So I was a guy painting a painting of a guy painting a painting.  I thought that was pretty clever and so forth and showed it to people and nobody seemed to care or think it was funny or whatever so I guess I just drank too much coffee and got a bit too close to insanity and too excited about a silly little idea.

Then last week I came across an old notebook from 2010 and I found a sketch I'd made.  It said "PAINT THIS !" and showed a scribble of an artist painting a painting of another artist painting a painting and so forth until infinity.

So it took me five years and completely forgetting that silly idea to actually get around to making a worse version of what I'd set myself out to do in the first place.

But I kind of like this new painting.

And I hope you do to !

Bidding starts at $0.01 with no reserve and FREE shipping anywhere in the world.

Paul Mancell Streetwear Jacket - One-of-a-kind !

LINK TO AUCTION: http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/141908760579

Our pal Paul Mancell dressed up like a creepy van salesman for Halloween in 2003 and he shaved his head into a cul-de-sac and grew a moustache and wore oversize glasses and had a huge rifle and walked around campus with a briefcase filled with cookies and for the week leading up to Halloween he sat on park benches staring at people really creepily and would munch on cookies.

So that was great.

A few years later my mom brought out some art supplies and Paul painted a self portrait of his creepy halloween get up and eventually the painting made the rounds and was above my mom and dad’s bed for several years.

Which was arguably even greater.

Then last year I started getting my paint on big time and wanted to make some fresh new iterations of Paul Mancell so I started with Paul Mancell the Burgundy Dodge Caravan Gun then Paul Mancell the skier then Paul Mancell the Spinx and finally got into the streetwear game and made this one-of-a-kind Paul Mancell Streetwear jacket while visiting Australia.

How much beer is this painting worth ?

LINK TO AUCTION: http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/141907856153

Today my dad dropped of a painting he made of some lips with a layered trippy background and left a note that said:

“SELL THIS LET’S BUY BEER WITH IT”

It didn’t have a title so I called it “Trippy Lips” and it didn’t have his signature, so I forged it very poorly but I can assure you this is an Ian MacDonald original painting !

So the question is:

how much beer is this painting worth ?

I hope we can turn this painting into lots of beer.

Because I love my dad and we both love beer

Only one way to find out.

My dad made this sculpture of a crow out of Velcro

Link to Auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/141906916772

One thing led to another and in the mid 90s my dad became Canada's largest wholesaler of Velcro and he got invited to the Official Velcro factory in New Hampshire and was one of the first people in the whole world to see the new machine that was producing a brand new type of Velcro called "OneWrap" that he wasn't supposed to tell us about because of an NDA but we were only teenagers at the time and New Hampshire was a LONG way from our Velcro warehouse in Port Coquitlam before the internet but anyhow his company has sold thousands of miles of Velcro over the last 20 years.  In fact, one time he sold fire-rated OneWrap velcro straps to NASA and they went on the International Space Station.

He's moved away from day-to-day hawking Velcro and is now an art student at Emily Carr University and he's doing all sorts of different art projects but his main focus has always been sculpture.

And lo and behold, my pop combined his passion of sculpture, Velcro, Crows, AND puns to create this magnificent Velcro Crow sculpture accurately named VELCROW.

And now you can bid on it !

Few things evoke America in the 20th century as much as Jackie Robinson stealing home in the 1955 World Series.  There's nobody else like number 42.  He broke major league baseball's color barrier, endured a career of horrible treatment by the baseball establishment, but above all else kept at it and was a damn great player and let's not forget: he stole home.  In the World Series.  Against the Yankees. The Best Slam Dunks OF ALL TIME.

Link to today’s auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/141904826416

Watch the 2016 NBA Slam Dunk Contest it if you haven’t already.

Aaron Gordon with the Best Dunks in History.  For real.  Over the mascot under the legs windmill?  360 windmill reverse ball snatch from arm of mascot rotating on hoverboard?  Are you kidding me?  Insanity. 100% athletic prowess and insane cultural zeitgeist showmanship.

The best.

Contest winner Zach LaVine threw down arguably more technically adept dunks and his athletic ability was completely on par with Gordon (maybe even better) but as amazing as LaVine’s dunks were, I can’t get the image Aaron gordon feet in the air ABOVE the mascot out of my head.

Instantly iconic.

Which brings us to today’s auction, the most iconic photograph in slam dunk contest history: Michael Jordan’s foul line dunk at the 1987 Slam Dunk Contest.

Jordan’s foul line jam was an amazing dunk.  Like larger than life great.  But arguably more amazing than the dunk itself was the spectacle and marketing imagery that followed. Every Single Shoe Store on the Planet from 1988 - 1992 had the Jordan Foul Line Dunk poster on its wall.  Every boy between the ages of 5 - 15 had that Jordan poster on his bedroom wall.  Every school locker was plastered with it.  The nerds had it.  Girls had it.  It went way beyond sports and marketing and became part of the larger cultural narrative.  Athletic prowess and shoe marketing combined to create a work of art.

In honor of iconic slam dunks, here’s my painting of Michael Jordan’s foul line dunk.

Today’s Pig Auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/141903195541

Last summer I made two paintings of a moose and a bear and put them up on my mom and dad’s wall and they loved them the most but then a month later I needed some paintings to fill the walls of Bandidas restaurant in Vancouver so I quietly took the bear and the moose paintings down from my mom and dad’s wall and put them in the restaurant. Our pal Finnigan sneakily put up this painting of a Colorful Pig and another one of a Colorful Cow in place of the moose and bear and for awhile my mom and dad didn’t notice but then one day my mom sat down on the couch and looked up at the wall and said “AAACK!” and nearly ruined the couch because she spat out so much coffee and laughed and couldn’t believe it and then my dad told me the story with a smile on his face and look here I am right now telling the story again.

Fun times !

This painting is a quite big 40"x30" COLORFUL PIG. It makes an excellent stand-in for a colorful bear if you’d ever like to prank your parents.

Always Use Bananas For Scale On The Internet

This is one of only seven total "colorful mooses" I've made so far with spray paint and every single one of these paintings is completely unique with different colors in different places because I used four individually-cut stencils for each of the colors and swapped the colors and stencils around so each painting is totally unique. It was a boring painstaking lengthy process to hand-cut four individual stencils out of transparent plastic sheets with an XACTO blade for each of the colors and yes next time I will use a laser cutting machine to cut the stencil and no next time after I've spray-painted on the stencil I will not put it down on the hood of our car paint-side-facing-down (!?) even though it might feel dry to the touch and then surprise surprise there's a huge spray paint mark on the hood of your car in the morning but wooops its not actually your car it's your amazing girlfriend Natalie's except it's only sort of hers because her dad gave it to her as a nice gift and her dad is awesome but surprise surprise isn't that stoked when her daughter and son-in-law show up at his house with his former car now emblazoned with a multi-color negative print of a smudged moose on the hood. And rightly so ! ------> Pro-tip: use acetone to take spray paint off a car. And do so right away rather than wait two months and endure the judgement (and rightly so!) by your father-in-law about your messy spray-painting ways. I really like this colorful moose and hope you do too. Bananas for scale. NOTE: if this painting doesn't sell for at least $123.45 USD by the end of the auction our formerly-covered-in-spray-paint 2007 Toyota Matrix will get its revenge and drive over the painting repeatedly until it's destroyed....and the painting wreckage will be used to create new a new artwork. What is an autographed postcard of a goat in a tree worth ?

People always ask me, what’s a red paperclip worth?  And I tell them, whatever somebody is willing to give you for it.  And then they laugh and say well in your case, it was worth a house!  - they think I got a house “for free” without realizing I only traded that red paperclip for a pen shaped like a fish so in my case the red paperclip was actually only worth a pen shaped like a fish.  But people really like the idea of trading a “red paperclip FOR a house” so who am I to stop them from thinking that?
But in actual reality I’m fascinated with the value of really ridiculous things.  Why do people place value on objects that have no meaning to others?  Why do people slave away at menial jobs to spend several months of their wage to buy a shiny piece of metal to put on their finger?  Why would somebody pay hundreds of dollars for a bottle of wine, or tens of thousands of dollars for a painting?
So with that in mind, what’s an autographed postcard of a goat in a tree worth ?
I bought this postcard in Morocco in 2003 and for the first 15 seconds it was the most interesting and important thing in the entire world…okay, maybe my girlfriend and family were more important, and actually, yes they were - by far - but they weren’t in my vision at that moment and that postcard of a goat in a tree took up my entire field of vision and brainpower and imagination and I had to have the postcard no matter what and thank goodness it was only 1 Dirham or less than 25 cents or whatever the guy in the shop said the price was because I probably would have spent a LOT more money than that on this amazing postcard.
I returned home from our Moroccan adventure and went to our family business and walked over to the postcard wall and proudly pinned this postcard to the wall already filled with hundreds of postcards from around the world sent in by friends and family and though “This is the best postcard on this entire wall, hands down” and left it at that and the ‘00s marched on and the internet arrived BIG TIME and nobody thought of postcards again because they were too busy doing live updates and putting #hashtags on things in #realtime.
Last night I walked by the postcard wall and saw the goat in the tree for the first time in more than a decade and decided to send it on an adventure back into the world of art and commerce and geography.
So I autographed it to make it official #art and now it’s up on eBay with a starting price of only $0.01 with free shipping anywhere in the world and somebody out there is going to have this goat in tree in their life and everything will once again be right in this crazy world.
Have a swell day,
- Kyle

The World's Longest Receipt™ is for sale on eBay for its production cost of $18,871.93

LINK TO FOR SALE LISTING:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/141900956846

Here's a video of when we bought the receipt as part of the Store Buyout project:

If this painting doesn’t sell for at least $234 USD in the next 7 days, I’ll destroy it.

Let’s talk about consequence.
I initially started these auctions as a standalone project called “Buy It Or Else”. The idea is that artworks will either sell or else they’ll be destroyed.
If a painting doesn’t sell I’ll wreck it in an interesting way and will use shrapnel from the artwork as raw materials for a new artwork which will be turned into a new artwork which will eventually be auctioned under the same “Buy it or else” premise.
Each artwork for sale on these auction is an original one-of-a-kind piece. It either sells or is gone forever.
Sure, there’s always the remote chance that a sold artwork will wind up on a secondary market and you might have another chance in the future to buy an exact piece of art you like. But for the most part it’s a “you snooze you lose” situation.
But when I list an item with a starting price of $0.01 with no reserve and FREE shipping anywhere in the world there’s a near 100% chance everything will sell…if even for only $0.01. There’s little to no consequence. The greatest risk is I spend countless hours creating a work of art and somebody buys it for a very low price and they’re really happy about the situation. I might not make much on the sale or even might drop into the red when art materials and shipping costs are included, but as far as things go, this is a pretty small risk.
You might ask “Why are you selling your art this way?” and here’s my answer.
I want to avoid:
-putting a price on my work
-building up a stockpile of artwork in my studio or in storage
-having dozens of paintings on gallery walls that “might” sell one day.

I want to make art and ship it to people that want it.
That’s it.
But I also want a real element of risk to this project.
So I’m upping the ante.
This auction has a reserve price of $234 USD.
Two outcomes possible:
1) The artwork sells for more than $234 or more.
2) I destroy it.
The $234 Bill painting is filled with lots of inside jokes and references to things I like:
-The United Ghinds of Burquitlam
-Department of Money
-Counterfeit Note
-Regional Minivan Reserve
-This note is 100% legit for all van purchases
-Signature
-Treasurer of Fakecouver
-The Free Taxi Rooster
-the serial number is my phone number aka The One Red Paperclip Inc. HOTLINE
I was really proud of all the details of the painting and the execution isn’t perfect but there’s a certain amount of charm and whimsicalness to the haphazardness of the piece. The rectangle doesn’t fit the frame perfectly because this was the first canvas I stretched onto a frame and I didn’t know what I was doing but after I saw how crooked it was I liked the kooky look and think it looks cool…but I’ve also upped my canvas stretching game since. There’s also a few scuff marks on the paint from when I moved the painting from location to location and I didn’t know about clear coating and when I finally did learn about clear coating I forgot to clean up the rub marks before applying the clear coats and then the clear coat dried so now the marks are there forever.
This painting isn’t perfect — but that’s the point. It’s a time capsule of my artist skills of the time.
I like the way it looks and it has sentimental value.
Which is why I want to sell it for its face value of $234. Or else.
I really want to rid my life of material things that I covet. I have a one month old daughter and am trying to make as much room possible for her in my life — and that means having less stuff in my life that isn’t her.
